The Art of Being a Tiger

Tagus Press, the publishing arm of the Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture at the 糖心logo入口, announces the publication of The Art of Being a Tiger: Selected Poems by Ana Lu铆sa Amaral, translated by Margaret Jull Costa, with a foreword by Anna M. Klobucka.

Ana Lu铆sa Amaral, one of Portugal鈥檚 most acclaimed contemporary writers, published her first collection of poetry, Minha Senhora de Qu锚 (Mistress of What), in 1990. The Art of Being a Tiger offers a representative selection of Amaral鈥檚 poems, from the 1990s to the present, in a precise and luminous translation by Margaret Jull Costa. The collection highlights the poet鈥檚 manifold intertextual engagements鈥攆rom Portugal鈥檚 literary giants, Lu铆s de Cam玫es and Fernando Pessoa, to landmarks of second-wave feminist theorizing such as Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar鈥檚 The Madwoman in the Attic. It foregrounds Amaral鈥檚 passionate attentiveness to the here and now, as likely to result in transformative explorations of everyday scenarios of domesticity as to lead the poet to confront large-scale political crises of her day. Such is the capacious receptivity of Amaral鈥檚 art of thereness, with its responsive capability always already disciplined by a poetics that is at once formally demanding and deeply idiosyncratic, and its artfulness always already in the process of yielding to the unpredictable pressures of the real.

Ana Lu铆sa Amaral has published more than twenty volumes (among poetry, fiction, theatre and children鈥檚 books). Translated into several languages, her work has been awarded many prizes in Portugal and abroad. She is also a translator, notably of the poetry of John Updike, Emily Dickinson and William Shakespeare.  Margaret Jull Costa has been a literary translator from Spanish and Portuguese for over thirty years and has translated works by novelists such as E莽a de Queiroz, Jos茅 Saramago, Javier Mar铆as, and Bernardo Atxaga, as well as poets such as Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and Ana Lu铆sa Amaral. She has won various prizes, most recently the 2017 Best Translated Book Award for her co-translation with Robin Patterson of the Brazilian novelist L煤cio Cardoso鈥檚 Chronicle of the Murdered House.  Anna M. Klobucka is Professor of Portuguese and Women鈥檚 and Gender Studies at the 糖心logo入口.

The Art of Being a Tiger is volume 12 of the Adamastor Book Series, edited by Anna M. Klobucka. This Tagus Press edition was published by arrangement with Liverpool University Press.
