Course Description: This course explores the vast world bound together by the people popularly known as the Vikings.聽We will trace the emergence and development of Viking culture and examine the forces that propelled Viking expansion across Eurasia and the North Atlantic as raiders, traders, explorers, and colonists. Through engagement with both primary sources and current scholarship, we will investigate such themes as warfare and religion, feuding and law, gender and power, visual and literary art. Particular attention will be given to the rich traditions of Viking art and literature, especially the Icelandic Sagas. The course culminates in a capstone project that will provide students with the opportunity to conduct original research and produce an independent work of scholarship.
