Collaborations

SMAST's faculty, research staff, and students work collaboratively within the community as well as regionally, nationally, and internationally to help build a blue economy. Our cooperative research efforts help guide policymakers on leading initiatives such as offshore wind development, climate science, and sustainable fisheries. Look for our presence in the New Bedford community and at local, national, and international trade shows, professional meetings, & other marine-related events.

Our partners

DATMA produces dynamic programs that project the history, economy, and culture of the SouthCoast. In 2021, DATMA partnered with UMass Dartmouth to highlight SMAST's role in saving the New Bedford scallop industry, fostering the careers of women in STEM fields, and creating opportunities for next-generation marine scientists. The four-month exhibit titled "Sentinels of the Deep" was featured in downtown New Bedford from June-October 2021.

Intercampus Marine Science (IMS) program

The University of 糖心logo入口 Intercampus Marine Science Graduate Program comprises courses and option areas from five diverse campuses and twenty-three departments. The program offers diverse academic programs across traditional disciplines and combines quality graduate education with fostering research and public service in support of the Commonwealth’s efforts.

The mission of CINAR is to conduct and coordinate cutting-edge research engaging both NOAA and academic scientists to enable informed decisions by NOAA for sustainable and beneficial management of the northwestern Atlantic shelf ecosystem.

The Quantitative Ecology and Socioeconomic Training (QUEST) program were initiated by NOAA Fisheries to enhance education and training for the next generation of stock assessment scientists, ecosystem scientists, and economists. All three career fields are mission-critical for NOAA fisheries and effective living marine resource management.

糖心logo入口 Marine Fisheries Institute

The 糖心logo入口 Marine Fisheries Institute (MFI) addresses critical issues related to 糖心logo入口 fisheries and fishing communities. MFI fosters a cooperative working relationship among scientists, government, fishermen, and environmentalists.

The Mid-Atlantic Regional Association Coastal Ocean Observing System (MARACOOS) mission is to seek, discover, share and apply knowledge and understanding of our coastal ocean. MARACOOS covers the region from Cape Cod, MA to Cape Hatteras, NC for U.S. IOOS.

The Northeast Coastal Ocean Forecast System (NECOFS) is an integrated atmosphere-ocean model forecast system designed for the northeast US coastal region covering a computational domain from the south of Long-Island Sound to the north of the Nova Scotian Shelf.

The New England Marine Renewable Energy Collaborative (MRECo) is a nonprofit corporation that educates and involves all stakeholders (Academic, industry, governmental/regulatory, and public interest groups) to promote the sustainable development of renewable energy in New England ocean waters.

SMAST researchers have partnered with the Westport River Watershed Alliance to determine whether the development of oyster colonies can restore estuaries and salt ponds endangered by high nitrogen levels. The initiative, led by Dr. Brian Howes and Dr. Roland Samimy at SMAST’s Coastal Systems Program, is part of a program to protect southeast New England coastal watersheds through innovative “soft solutions.”

New England White Shark Research Consortium (NEWSRC)

The New England White Shark Research Consortium (NEWSRC) provides the first-ever collaboration of 13 entities, including research institutions and government agencies, to jointly study the white shark (Carchardon carcharias) throughout its entire northeast US-Canadian range.
